About

Located in the cultural heart of M4H, the Keile District in Rotterdam is a vibrant cultural hub where art, innovation, and community come together. With studios, exhibition spaces, workshops, and shared spaces, it’s a hub for creative exchange, attracting both local and international talent. Its community is anchored within various historical warehouses and former port land such as Brutus, Soundport, Foodunion Rotterdam, ClubBIT, Keile Café, Katoenveem, Keilepand, Crossing Keileweg, Katoenhuis,Keilewerf, Daan Roosegaarde, Kunst & Complex, and Food Garden. Its impact goes beyond Rotterdam, reinforcing the city’s reputation for creativity and innovation. It gives the area its identity and lays a solid foundation for future housing development. The future of Keile District will center around these activities: Makers, creativity, craftsmanship, living, collectives, and  hospitality.

The Keilekwartier Foundation was established in 2025 by stakeholders active in the area and united in the Keilekwartier Area Cooperative. The foundation is committed to a sustainable, socially and culturally responsible, and economically sound development of the Keilekwartier.

We do this by actively organizing and strengthening collaboration in the area in a cooperative manner. We connect property owners and primary users of buildings and land, the municipality, and knowledge institutions. We make their needs and ambitions transparent and bring them together in collective goals, as reflected in the Area Ambition Document adopted in 2026. In doing so, we give shape to the Merwe-Vierhavens motto: “Collectivity as the foundation for circularity.”

In addition, we support and coordinate the social and cultural programming in the area. We stimulate knowledge development—for example around cooperative forms of collaboration and value models—and, where needed, support initiatives and projects that contribute to the collective development of the Keilekwartier.

Alderman Chantal Zeegers (Climate, Construction and Housing) in reaction to the Area Ambition Document: “Thanks to the unique collaborations with the existing stakeholders in the area, a new piece of city is being created here in Merwe-Vierhavens for diverse groups of people. This truly is a case of shaping the city together.”
