On June 5th, more than 25 innovative entrepreneurs, representatives from the Municipality of Rotterdam, and members of the Keilecollectief gathered at the Keilepand for the first M4H Makers MeetUp. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from across the Makers District to discuss a shared challenge: how to ensure that M4H and RDM continue to offer space for makers, entrepreneurs, and innovators in the years ahead.
The roundtable discussion revealed a strong sense of common purpose among participants. While attendees represented different sectors and interests, there was broad agreement on several key priorities for the future of the area. These included preserving affordable workspaces for makers, strengthening the local network and community, creating opportunities for experimentation and innovation, and maintaining a healthy balance between residential development and productive workspaces.
Another recurring theme was the importance of collaboration between makers, public institutions, and the Port of Rotterdam. Participants emphasized the value of building stronger connections across the ecosystem and ensuring that talent can develop within the district through internships, apprenticeships, educational partnerships, and entrepreneurial opportunities.
The conversations underscored that a thriving innovation ecosystem does not emerge automatically. It depends on continuous dialogue, collaboration, and the active involvement of everyone contributing to the area's development. The MeetUp provided a platform for these exchanges and highlighted the role that community plays in shaping the future of the Makers District.
For many participants, the event marked their first opportunity to meet others working in the area, despite being located only a few hundred meters apart. This highlighted one of the key strengths of the initiative: creating connections that can lead to new ideas, collaborations, and opportunities.
The roundtable forms part of a broader series of discussions taking place during Rotterdam Architecture Month. Visitors can also explore The Power of Community, an exhibition at the Keilepand that examines the role of collective action and collaboration in urban development. The exhibition is open free of charge until 28 June, from W
ednesday through Sunday between 14:00 and 18:00.
