September 12 – December 14 | BRUTUS

Er kraait geen haan naar I Exhibition

Imagine a house, somewhere in Rotterdam. A golden yellow glow beams at you through the window. You look inside. It is warm and cozy, A meal is steaming on a somewhat messily set table. Lost toys are everywhere and a cat sleeps in the windowsill. Really one of those houses where you immediately feel at home. But what if this house is in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan? Where 7-year-old Narges lives, not yet knowing that she will soon have to flee? Where there is no money for food, let alone heating? From September 12, 2025, Narges Mohammadi (1993, AF) will have her largest and most personal solo exhibition to date at Brutus Space in Rotterdam. In this impressive site-specific and new art installation, she gives shape to memories from her childhood in Afghanistan. The exhibition and accompanying public program aim to make visitors reflect on the social issue of poverty and the human dignity and resilience associated with it. The goal is to inspire and connect a broad, new and diverse audience to these pressing themes.

Everything is True – Nothing is Permitted

EVERYTHING IS TRUE - NOTHING IS PERMITTED is a celebration of art's power to subvert our expectations, to inspire, heal, excite, confuse, disrupt and challenge perception. At the same time, it is an uncompromising protest against the glitz and glamour of an art market that reduces art's value to mere investment and entertainment. EVERYTHING IS TRUE - NOTHING IS PERMITTED revolves around the resilience of artists who refuse to accept their role as a lifestyle decorators or producers of luxury brand assets. They sink their teeth into the consequences of violence, extremism, racism, fashion, power, inequality and capitalist excess. Without moralising, they demonstrate what art can be: a powerful voice that deconstructs the madness of a world in which language has been disconnected from meaning and art detached from its own history. EVERYTHING IS TRUE - NOTHING IS PERMITTED is in collaboration with A/POLITICAL The exhibition shows highly explosive work by Alexander Brener, Alfredo Jaar, Andrei Molodkin, Andres Serrano, Arthur Jafa, Betty Tompkins, Bruce LaBruce, Carlos Martiel, Cassils, Cildo Meireles, David Wojnarowicz / Andreas Sterzing, Democracia, Dinos and Jake Chapman, Dread Scott, Dunes Keifer, Edith Dekyndt, FEMEN, Franko B, Gilbert and George, Gino de Dominicis, Gustav Metzger, Guy Debord, Hollie Miller, Inna Shevchenko / Elsa Okazaki , Johan Grimonprez, Kara Walker, Kendell Geers, Kennardphillipps, Kevin Ford / Smriti Keshari / Eric Schlosser, Kubra Khademi, Lerato Shadi, Lynda Benglis, Made in Eric, Mandy El-Sayegh, Marcel Broodthaers, María María Acha-Kutscher, Maria Metsalu, Marina Abramović, Marinella Senatore, Martha Rosler, Mat Collishaw, Merzedes Sturm-Lie, Melanie Weill, Michel François, Milica Tomić, Nadya Tolokonnikova / Pussy Riot, Nica Roses, Nika Neelova, Oleg Kulik, Patrick Codenys / Front242, Petr Davydtchenko, Pyotr Pavlensky, Regina José Galindo, René Magritte, Salvador Dalí / Luis Buñuel, Santiago Sierra, Selma Selman, Sigalit Landau, Sophie Whettnall, Steven Cohen, The Late Estate of Broomberg and Chanarin, Tracey Rose, Ulay, Valie Export

June 7 | M4H

Parfum x M4H: Future makers on the Maas

By now it's a yearly tradition: Parfum de BoemBoem heads into M4H (Merwe-Vierhavens) to take a close look at how this still raw industrial edge of the city is gradually transforming into a new urban district where living, working, and learning are central. During the M4H expedition, we visit makers working on the future; through circular use of resources, new clean and sustainable energy sources, and smart mobility. Along the way, we walk past former harbour sheds and warehouses that breathe the rich history of the port of Rotterdam, with artists, musicians, and performers adding an extra experience to the area in their own poetic way. The M4H: Future Makers on the Maas route is guided by the innovative mix of living, working, and learning in M4H. The Municipality of Rotterdam and the Port of Rotterdam Authority are developing M4H into a lively mix of residential and work spaces, with hospitality, design, and arts and culture. Innovative entrepreneurs, architects, researchers, designers, and creatives work together here to conceive, test, and develop smart applications for a sustainable city and port. Walk along and be inspired by an area that is in full transformation. Join us on Saturday, June 7, 2025, for an expedition through M4H and meet, among the Marconi towers, old harbour sheds and quays, the innovative and circular makers of tomorrow, as well as inspiring storytellers and artists. DATE: Saturday, June 7, 2025
TIMES: 11:00 and 14:30 (duration approx. 2.5 hours)
 PRICE: €15
TICKETS: Ticket sales start Friday, April 25 at 10:00

April 17 | Keilepand

Carbon Stories at Keilepand explores, together with all disciplines from the construction industry, what (systemic) changes are needed to achieve a climate-positive built environment. On April 17, we’ll do this in a playful way by testing your knowledge with a quiz night. Are you ready for the ultimate challenge? The Carbon Quiz 2025 is your chance to put your knowledge of CO₂ reduction to the test in an informal setting. This is your moment to compete with colleagues from the construction sector for the Carbon Quiz 2025 prize! Carbon Stories is an initiative by IABR, Keile Collectief, Klimaat Academie Rotterdam, and GROUP A architects.

Filmscreening: Documentary "Samenwonen"

At a time when housing is becoming increasingly expensive—sometimes even unaffordable—housing cooperatives as a collective form of living are gaining popularity in the Netherlands. They offer permanently affordable housing and positively contribute to a sense of community in a neighborhood. Unfortunately, Rotterdam is lagging behind other cities in developing housing cooperatives. That’s why RoCoCo (Rotterdam Collective of Housing Cooperatives) was recently established—to promote the cooperative housing model, bring together and inform resident groups, and inspire local politicians to give this form of affordable collective living a real chance in the city. Through the screening of the documentary Samenwonen, the story is told of how the first housing cooperative in Amsterdam came into being—through both challenges and triumphs. After the film, people with first-hand experience will be present to answer questions and offer advice to those interested in starting a cooperative housing initiative themselves. Het Wijkpaleis | April 24 | 20:00 – 21:30 (doors open at 19:30) | free entry

What to see

240712_KH010_Getijdenpark Opening__Iris van den Broek_3489.jpg

Getijdenpark

Getijdenpark Keilehaven is a unique combination of an urban park and a natural estuary system designed by landscape architects De Urbanisten. Situated in the Keile District, the cultural heart of Rotterdam’s M4H area, it seamlessly integrates into a hub of art, technology, and creative industries. Visitors can explore nearby cultural spaces such as the Katoenhuis Immersive Experience Hub, the art incubator Kunst & Complex, the artist-run playground Brutus, and the design-focused Keilepand. The Voedseltuin (Food Garden), located opposite the tidal park, offers an additional green escape within the district.   Getijdenpark has been transformed from a rocky industrial area into a vibrant tidal park in 2024. Due to its open connection to the sea, the water level rises and falls by approximately one and a half meters twice a day. This dynamic environment fosters biodiversity and reconnects people with nature in the heart of Rotterdam’s Merwe-Vierhavens (M4H) district.

The Food Garden

The Food Garden (Voedseltuin) was founded in August 2010 in order to supply the Food Bank Rotterdam (an organisation that delivers free food packages to low-income households) with fresh and healthy vegetables and fruits. This goal has been achieved and the Food Garden has already produced large amounts of vegetables for several years that are put into the food packages distributed by the Food Bank. The garden is also an area-oriented and participatory design facility to give rise to a vital place. Together with users and other stakeholders, an area plan has been developed, in which the design of The Food Garden was the central theme.
